This workshop is co-organized by Lissi-iSnS (University Paris 12, France), CNRS Chizé (CEBC, France), ACCOBAMS (UNEP/CMS Agreement).
Objectives
The purpose of the workshop is to present current research on the detection and localization of marine mammals using passive acoustics. Researchers are invited to present their scientific work, to detail the advantages and drawbacks of the methods they use and to show their recent results through a practical approach.
Participants
The workshop encourages presentations from different fields. Scientific researchers could include specialists in biology, acoustics, signal processing, mathematics, electronics, computer science. Participation may be limited to ensure a dynamic and interactive exchange.
The workshop will be open to Masters and PhD Students.
Workshop Schedule
The workshop consists of several sessions reserved for oral communications. The last half-day will be reserved for the comparison of all scientific methods presented using a common data set of recorded sperm whale signals. This data set is available on the website. The participants who do not work on this specific dataset are also welcome to join the workshop, and present their own work on detection and localization techniques based on passive acoustics.

To access the data set
The last half-day of the workshop will be reserved for the comparison of all scientific methods presented using the same data set.
NUWC is the provider for this data set. The data set is an extract from sperm whale sounds recorded by NUWC team. It is comprised of regular cliks and creaks. The data set #1 has multiple sperm whales, 6 hydrophones for 20 minutes. The data set #2 has just one sperm whale with reverb., 5 hydrophones, for 25 minutes. The data set includes a document with information related to the experimental set up, recording equipment, environmental conditions, etc. The document also includes a description of the audio files.
Based on this data set, the work submitted to the researchers will be on:
1. Sperm whale click detection
2. Estimation of the number of distinct sperm whales
3. Association of clicks to individual whales
4. Sperm whale localization and/or tracking

Registration
The workshop fees will be 160 euros before October 7th October 21th (100 euros for students)
and 220 euros after October 7th October 21th (150 euros for students)
The workshop fees include the scientific pre-program, site-down lunch and coffee breaks. The registration gives access to the ice-breaking reception, the 16th of November from 7-9 pm at the Oceanographic Museum.

Conference Venue
The Workshop will be held at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco. The Principality of Monaco with its world famous Rock lies between France and the Mediterranean Sea. The prestige and the fame of this attractive territory, neighbouring with the French département of Alpes-Maritimes, spread much further than its borders, which the French writer Colette described as being "made of flowers". Its space is limited (195 ha.), but the site is enchanting and unfolds along a narrow coastal strip four kilometres long, bounded by the mountainous foothills of the Tête de Chien and Mount Agel.
