CIRCE NEWSLETTER n° 2

Welcome onboard!

We are actively preparing our research missions for the year 2002:

• In the Ligurian Sea with the fin whales, thanks to the partnership with the SCS (Swiss Cetacean Society) which is lending us Ichthus, a 14 m long sailing boat, and his skipper-owner Christian Gras, known for the quality of his welcome and his sailor skills.

All the cruises aboard Ichthus are already full but they are still a few places left on other boats of the SCS, information and application on: www.oenology.ch/scs/ or with Max-Olivier Bourcou: mbourcou@worldcom.ch

• · And in Gibraltar with sperm whales, killer whales, pilot whales and other dolphins onboard Elsa a 10 m long motorboat and CIRCE's team based in Algeciras. All research volunteers' missions are already full for summer 2002. However, the program for 2003 will be available from October 2002 on our website (www.circe-asso.org) under the heading "Ecotourism with scientific orientation". A special killer whale on behavioural ecology mission is already scheduled for spring 2003 for at least 2 weeks. The missions in the Strait will continue between mid-June and mid-September 2003.

Your comments - suggestions - questions

This heading is for you; do not hesitate to send us questions, comments and suggestions to

Question from Mathieu, Marie, Isabelle and many more: could you take, as a research volunteer, onboard Elsa my 16 year old nephew … my 14 year old son … my 15 year old niece?

CIRCE: for administrative reasons, it is impossible: we are not habilitated to take in charge underage, unless they are accompanied by a responsible adult, no problem and welcome onboard!

Comment from Danielle: Thank you for your first Newsletter, I learned many fascinating things however I would really like to know whether fin whales stay in the Mediterranean Sea or are they migrating to the Atlantic?

CIRCE: yes it is frustrating for us as well! We hope to bring you an answer after these summer missions. You are following our research live and are sharing our impatience, lets all stay persistent!

Ask the program

For this second Newsletter, we have chosen to tell you about the most abundant cetacean of the Ligurian Sea: the striped dolphin a.k.a. Stenella coeruleoalba for the specialists and about photo-identification, what is it for, how to tackle it and what are the mistakes to avoid.
